Bonang Matheba is arguably South Africa’s biggest celebrity and socialite and her first reality show was due on the premier black entertainment channel Vuzu Amp. This needed a controversial piece that will push the AR’s high and get her ultra fans as well as the haters, to tune in and watch this much anticipated series. She has a very big social media following and manages her personal brand and image to the T. Our concept, came in very left-wing showcasing her ‘natural’ and not on the red-carpet, in an albeit stylized space. Towards the end we realise she is the Instagram window (we tailored this to VUZUGRAM) on her phone, asking the serious question about what is real and what isn’t on social media and causing huge stir amongst her fans. They’ve never seen her like this before. The show had the highest AR rating of any other local show up to date.

How can we shoot a Queen without a drone? Albeit not very easily inside a studio with lots of cables throwing off the sensor. There was definitely one or two close moments with clients alike ducking for cover! Bonang was situated on a custom made lightbox measuring to the ratios of a smartphone while the camera got all her best angles. The tear that got Twitter raging, was created using eyedrops instilled by our Creative Director into the corner of her eye. All of this made for very entertaining television that got the world talking about whether or not she was capable of such emotion. The show – for sure bared it all. We then set out to create a unique ‘Instagram’ feed that wouldn’t be liable to legalities calling it Vuzugram and animated all the 2D graphics in in After Effects to resemble an Instagram feed. The phone was created in Maya and tracked and superimposed onto the filmed lightbox. Why go to the trouble of building a lightbox when we replace it all in post? For the beautiful lighting – peeps. It’s all about the lighting.
